Description
Valery Gergiev, conductor. Berlioz: Royal Hunt and Storm from Les Troyens
Introduction, Ball, Adagio, Scherzo, and March to the Grave from Romeo and Juliet
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 in e, Op. 64
Romantic-with-a-capital-R, this program promises a night to remember. Valery Gergiev’s inimitable collaboration with his finely honed ensemble always produces fireworks in the Russian repertoire, so their performance of Tchaikovsky’s heart-stopping Symphony No. 5 will likely burn into the consciousness of anyone who hears it. The rest of the program is a bit more intriguing, featuring some of the most vivid, hypnotically evocative music of French master Hector Berlioz—the Royal Hunt and Storm from his opera Les Troyens, and five orchestral excerpts from his dramatic choral symphony, Roméo et Juliette. Berlioz was an unruly genius capable of the most astonishing musical provocation, which still makes the pulse race almost two centuries later.
Prior to the concert, ticket-holders are invited to a free Prelude in the Prudential Hall lobby, featuring originals and standards from the jazz-pop duo Jon & Lynn. This evening's Prelude also includes a Made by Hand arts and crafts exhibit and sale featuring work by Sheila Fernekes (beadwork jewelry), Barbara Bass (wearable art), Nick Vaverko (leather accessories and jewelry), and Maya Hilario and Veni Evangelista (leather handbags, belts and accessories).
