SUMMARY:A Body of Art: Phenomenological Viewings
DESCRIPTION:notion that all art is inherently physical -- artists engage with the work, the viewer interprets its physical sensory data; and, in some instances, the body becomes the medium for the art itself.  Exploring the latter point further, this show looks to explore the body in contemporary art; specifically, the methods through which the body is handled in an artful manner, to convey messages beyond its anatomical function.  How do we as a society engage the body? How do we become more intimate with the body -- or, perhaps, what barriers do we put in place to alienate it?

This show, through the collaborative efforts of Dr. Jenna Ferrey and Brandon Reis, seeks to add to this dialogue, calling into question the aesthetic prejudices in what society considers as art worth recognizing.

TATTOOING INSTALLATION
In what will be a first for Sotheby's Institute, this curation will feature an installation where participants may sit for a tattoo with artists from Citizen Ink. Citizen Ink has designed flash tattoos specifically for this occassion, within the $50-200 range. For any inquiries regarding sitting for a tattoo, please refer to the link here.

Citizen Ink is a tattoo studio based in Brooklyn, New York. Each artist within the studio's program specializes in a unique aesthetic, from Traditional, Photo Realism, Blackwork, and Portraiture to Japanese and Tribal styles. Citizen Ink specializes in the juxtaposition of Neo-Traditional tattoos with Russian tattooing born from prison culture.  As such, the works produced by these artists depict clean, bold linework and extraordinary imagery, transforming common tattoo motifs. Much like gallerists with art fairs, Citizen Ink has participated in several tattoo conventions, notably Inked Out, in New Jersey; and, the Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention, in 2016.
