V. Charakhovich joined the diplomatic service in 1999. From 1999 to 2005 he served as Second, First Secretary of the Department for Economic Co-operation with the Regions of the Russian Federation, Department for Cooperation with African and Asian Countries, and Consular Affairs Department. 
 
He was appointed to the Consulate General of Belarus in New York in 2005, and served as Vice-consul there from June 2005 through April 2008. 
 
He also held position of the First Secretary (political section) at the Embassy of Belarus in Tel Aviv from 2010 through 2013. 
 
He served as Counselor of the Office for Multilateral Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus from March 2013 through April 2015, where his duties covered Belarus participation in UN peace-keeping operations, and realization of IOM initiatives in Belarus.
 
In October 2014, he joined the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, and spent six months in the Donetsk Oblast of Ukraine, where he served as OSCE SMM monitor, head of unit in OSCE Mariupol Patrol Hub. AoR included areas controlled by Ukrainian Armed Forces and so-called DPR forces (Shyrokine, Kominternove, Granitne, Novoazovsk, Ukrainian-Russian border). 
 
From April 2015, at the Foreign Ministry of Belarus, V.Charakhovich as Head of the United States and Canada Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus was responsible for Belarus' bilateral relationships with the United States and Canada.
 
In July 2016 he was appointed to the position of Consul General of Belarus in New York.
 
V. Charakhovich is married with two daughters.
