SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening of "City of Shadows" at the Deering Estate
DESCRIPTION:his documentation of the urban landscape of Merida, the vital capital city of the Yucatan. They posit an immensely rich yet chaotic visual experience for the observer as an exploration of light and shadows that belies conventional spatial readings of a landscape where time, space and memory simultaneously play. The exhibit is free and open to the public. RSVP is preferred on Eventbrite. The exhibition will be on view from February 1 through March 29, daily, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
  Works were commissioned at the Deering Estate and presented at the 16th International Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018. Additional pieces from the Biennale are also on view and feature Domemech's photographs of the architectural work of Jorge Hernandez. The exhibit will be on display daily, February 1 – March 29, 2019, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Throughout the year, the Deering Estate offers complementary exhibit viewing nights, highlighting a variety of contemporary and historic exhibitions inside the historic homes.   Cultural Arts Programming at the Deering Estate is made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami- Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, and The Deering Estate Foundation, Inc.  Carlos M. Domenech, Photographer Carlos Domenech, born in Guantanamo, Cuba in 1954, immigrated to the US with his family in 1966. He studied at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and received a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art Photography with a minor in Architectural Photography in 1982. Mr. Domenech commenced his professional career in 1984 by documenting architecture and interiors. He lives in Miami and is presently working on a selection of book projects.  Carlos is an architectural and fine art photographer whose commissions over the last 34 years have extended from the U.S., Europe and South America to Russia and Asia. His editorial work has been published globally in numerous journals, including Architectural Digest, Casa Vogue Spain, AD Italy, House & Garden Australia, House Beautiful, Metropolitan Home, Sothern Accents, Veranda, and in travel books on China, Istanbul, Ecuador, Guatemala, Russia, Italy and Spain. His photography of the imperial palaces of St. Petersburg was exhibited and included in the catalog "Palaces of St. Petersburg, The Russian Imperial Style." He was sent on assignment to Asia, to photo document Chinese culture and architecture for a traveling exhibition, which included the renowned site of the Xian Burial Soldiers. Additionally, his photography has been exhibited in museums and galleries and acquired for numerous private and museum collections. In the last ten years, Carlos Domenech has fused his architectural and fine art photography, arriving at an artistic intersection, where the qualities of both genres have become one.
He has collaborated with Jorge Hernandez in many projects including the Colonial churches of Santiago de Cuba. The Civic Landscape of the Historical South, as well as photographing the architect's work for the last 25 years.
Jorge L. Hernandez, Architect Jorge L. Hernandez is a professor and a practitioner of Architecture. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1956, his family immigrated to Miami in 1961. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Miami in 1980 and his Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia in 1985 where he studied design, architectural history and theory. He joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1985 and since 1987 has been a professor of Architecture at the University of Miami.  Jorge has lectured in Europe and the United States, has taught for the Prince of Wales School of Architecture, and has participated in numerous international symposia and conferences. His work has been published in the United States, South America and Europe in various books and journals. In 1996 he was selected to be one of 40 architects featured in that decade’s 40 Under 40, is a Cintas Fellow, and he collaborated with Vincent Scully on a book entitled Between Two Towers: The Drawings of the School of Miami. In 2002, Kilczkowski Publishers issued a monograph entitled Casas/Houses: Jorge L. Hernandez.
Jorge L. Hernandez Architect PA (JLH Architect), founded in 1987, has completed over sixty carefully crafted projects, ranging from custom residences to civic structures, churches and large-scale urban projects. Among these are the Williamsburg James City County Courthouse, Miami’s Brickell Bridge and the Coral Gables Museum. Jorge has served on numerous national, state and local boards and agencies. He was Vice Chair of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Chair of the State of Florida Historic Preservation Advisory Council, Vice Chair of the Florida Historical Commission, Trustee of the Florida Trust and a member of the Florida State Historic Marker Council.
An advocate of an architecture of place, memory and duty, his professional and research interest advances the necessity of a natural-cultural vision of environmental stewardship. A collaboration with Carlos Domenech, this exhibit, Lightbox, for the European Cultural Centere during the Venice Biennale 2018, explores light as an intellectual, physical and metaphysical agent in shaping architecture. Architecture is made of light.
