SUMMARY:Denis Ouch: Angles on My Screen (2018) Pop-Up Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The gallery will host an opening reception for Denis Ouch on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, from 6 to 9pm.
WHERE ARE YOUR WINGS THAT I LOVED is a unique stylistic combination of abstraction, pop and street art stylistic elements. Effectively blending the elements of these three truly international artistic movements, Denis reflects on the positive side of globalization.
For this series, Denis abandons his usual street style aesthetics of domineering images and vast backgrounds in favor of small-scale cultural and commercial icons of the 20th Century and beyond. Steve Jobs, George Washington, Madonna, David Bowie and Kim Kardashian, are globally recognized icons of power, fame, influence and style, who are simultaneously idolized and ridiculed by the artist. Unexpectedly, these programmatic images acquire a pair of wings, a surprising twist reflecting the artist’s irony and fascination with the banal. Which results in thirteen luminous canvases of mixed media paintings, a perfect Pop blend of relevant subject matter and sophisticated execution and asking audience a question of what gives us wings?
Angels of today, influencing tomorrow, and shedding the feathers, leaving traces in the history.
Only Untitled 8 (2019), featuring the Statue of Liberty, retains the artist’s signature monumental proportions.
Seen together, the works in the series underscores Denis’s ceaseless examination of global pop culture as he continues to develop his aesthetic vocabulary that is at once universal and deeply personal. Denis sends element ‘Angels’ presented in various characters of trivial culture into a playful flight against mauve, blue and pink layers of paint. Where the viewer’s eye is forcefully drawn to Artist’s allusive visual quotes. Or, one can lose self in rich subliminal background of pure abstraction, a free play of words, forms colors and energy that lends the work a unique meditative quality.
WHERE ARE YOUR WINGS THAT I LOVED reflects an unexpected combination of the material and immaterial, the pure, physical presence of color bringing forward visual dignity of Pop imagery, reestablishing its status of high art.
