SUMMARY:Russian Masterworks for Cello and Piano II
DESCRIPTION:for an enchanting evening of RUSSIAN MASTERWORKS FOR CELLO AND PIANO II, showcasing some of the most impassioned works for cello and piano by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Arensky, and Shostakovich. Our all-Russian program will open with Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky's deeply heartfelt Nocturne in D minor, op. 19 (1873) - one of the Six Morceaux, originally for solo piano, full of Tchaikovsky's signature Slavic lyricism and melancholy. Dmitri Shostakovich's one-and-only Cello Sonata in D minor, op. 40 (1934) was one of his early works, composed just prior to the censure by Soviet authorities of his music, which showcases Shostakovich's hallmark sarcasm and irony, reflective introspection, despair, biting wit, and dark humor. A precocious Russian Romantic composer, pianist, and teacher, Anton Arensky (1861-1906) composed a number of characterful miniatures for cello and piano, which include his exquisite Romance in D Major, op. 56 (1894-1900) - an amorous melodic gem that no doubt influenced Arensky's pupil, Sergei Rachmaninoff, in his youthful and unabashedly romantic Cello Sonata in G minor, op. 19 (1901): Rachmaninoff's best, and regrettably his last, work of chamber music and one of the most oft-performed Sonatas of all cello-piano repertoire, full of Rachmaninoff's trademark tenderness and tempestuousness, soaring melodies, richly chromatic harmonies, bell-like sonorities, scintillating pianistic filigree, and highly idiomatic writing for both players alike. This impassioned musical journey through the Russian Masterworks for Cello and Piano II is NOT to be missed!
