Meet the film director, Yulia Shashkova, who is flying in from Ukraine to present and discuss her film.
This documentary was shot in real time primarily during the Revolution of Dignity, 2013-2014. The time was very intense for a nation that was still floundering among the ruins of Soviet Union. But with great hope for a bright future, the people of Ukraine stood ready to fight. The filmmakers did too, and continue to fight, not with weapons, but armed with cameras.
The First Company is a film that rips away the masks of civil society in times of conflict – good and evil, hatred and love, disputes and reconciliation. This is a story about brothers-in-arms, friends, patriots, who against all odds retained their humanity. After the events on the Maidan and throughout the war they are the ones creating a new Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Museum's film series and traditional arts programs are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
