DESCRIPTION:Sofya Tsvetikova’s lively acrylic paintings celebrate human togetherness and a universal connection. Tsvetikova paints dense compositions that depict figures communicating, embracing, and reaching out into nature. She paints people as collections of bold shapes and colors, sometimes with leaves or flowers standing in as body parts. Her figures stretch up into the sky; they sway in the wind; they stand among the sun and the moon. Empty spaces are filled with bright patterns that make the energy in the air visible.

Tsvetikova’s method echoes that of certain surrealist and abstract painters of the 1950s. She puts pen to paper with no intention in mind, and then lets the movement spark her interest: a turn here, a lighter touch or a harder touch there, and suddenly she is building a composition. This approach is all the more fascinating in that it results, eventually, in a representational image. Tsvetikova pulls her scenes purely from instinct and imagination.

Tsvetikova was born in Moscow, Russia and currently lives in Charleston, South Carolina. She is a self-taught artist.
