SUMMARY:The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov
DESCRIPTION:Her struggles with love and finances, history and progress — as well as those of her family, friends, and servants — fill the pages of this tragicomedy about family, history, and impending social change.
Our production is a Cherry Orchard redefined for the Latinx community. The word Latinx refers to people of all genders of Latin American cultural or racial identity specifically within the United States. It is a word that already assumes a conversation across cultures of Latinidad within a dominant culture of the US. This production explores how different Latinx experiences and identities, in conversation with white American experiences and identities, might embody the class structures and language of this classic play. Like Russian nesting dolls, we have placed the intersections of various Latin-American histories of the 20th century, within an American reality of the 21st century, inside turn-of-the-century Russia. In doing so, we hope to illuminate and investigate the stories we tell about ourselves, our collective histories, our family mythologies, and the very notions of progress and future within a Latinx imaginary.
