SUMMARY:Short Hikes in the Adirondacks
DESCRIPTION:peaks there: one on Sat. morning, one in the afternoon, then the same on Sunday before driving back. There is a new patch for some of these peaks, although some peaks are not on the list. We'll stay and camp at the tent sites at ADK Loj S. of Lake Placid Fri. and Sat. night. There are water points and shower facilities there. If we leave early enough, we should have time to hike the very short Owl's Head Mt. en route to the campground. We'll hike Pitchoff Mt. Sat. morning: this is NE of the campsite, and gives good views of Cascade Mt. We'll then drive into Lake Placid, pick up lunch, then drive to Catamount Mt. NE of Lake Placid. This low mountain looks like it has some nice rock scrambles, has lakes on three sides and the taller Whiteface Mt. on its S. side. Late in the day, we'll drive to the town and lake of Saranac Lake. The US's first tuberculosis sanatorium was built here by the US's first germ theory adherent late in the 19th-C., and you can still see some of the buildings there, including the house where author Robert Louis Stevenson stayed. For the evening meal, there are cookout facilities at the campground. There are probably places in Saranac Lake as well, and I know of a faster-service and less-crowded microbrewery in Lake Placid with arguably better food and beer than the more crowded places downtown. We'll hike the Jay Peaks E. of Lake Placid and N. of Keene on the way out on Sun. morning. We should have enough time that afternoon to hike up and down Blueberry Mt., overlooking the Keene Valley Meadow, on the way out of the High Peaks. Here is part of a documentary about the sanitarium and its founder (no rights for it reserved by me): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lv0vAWbj74

How to find us: 1002 Adirondack Loj Rd, Lake Placid, NY 12946. There is no phone service at the campsite, but we can share tent site locations before the trip weekend. Be sure to reserve your site, but remember that usually there are at least two tents/site, so "tent-share" one vehicle, two tents per site.
