SUMMARY:Viktor Yaichnikov’s Soft and Subtle Oil Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Viktor Yaichnikov’s oil paintings on canvas exude a soft and sensuous air and light. Often painting the figure postured to express specific reflective emotions, this internationally acclaimed Russian artist aims to infuse his simple domestic scenes with his own self-awareness and a touch of subtle humor. The direct nature of Yaichnikov’s compositions is very much in line with some of his greatest painting influences: Modigliani, Matisse and Soutine.
While a narrative is inferred in his works, it appears that the figurative subjects of his works are primarily used as a vehicle for Yaichnikov to perfect and hone his craft. Surface, color, and the exploration of light and form are at the core of his work. The texture of the surfaces of the paintings is uniquely polished like a gem with sweeping brushstrokes and a lacquer glazing technique of which the artist shows himself a master. The paintings appear at first to be quiet due to their subjects and delicate use of color. Yet, on closer examination, these works open up, exposing Yaichnikov’s expert ability to subtly and skillfully build a sophisticated painting.

About the Exhibition

The variety that exists in the exhibition, Reconstructing Reality, creates a sense of exploration that cannot be denied. The viewer is able to go from the ephemeral to the figurative in just a few moments, only to be snapped back to an equally jarring duality between works of traditional embroidery and surreal landscapes. The contrast, though strong, is far from harsh, with each piece made entirely accessible by the expertise each artist puts into their own styles and works, allowing for the viewer to fully enjoy the full range of art on display.
