DESCRIPTION:family as they are caught up in the fractious civil war consuming Ukraine after the Russian Revolution. This is Bulgakov's first novel, and it arguably saved his life: Stalin was such a fan of a Bulgakov's stage adaptation that he intervened to protect his job at a Moscow theater, allowing Bulgakov to live and work untouched by the purges that claimed so many other Russian writers of the period. We'll be reading this in two installments, with the first meet up covering chapters 1 through 10 (up to pg. 168 in the Michael Glenny translation). Happy reading!
