DESCRIPTION:in the fractious civil war consuming Ukraine after the Russian Revolution. This is Bulgakov's first novel, and it arguably saved his life: Stalin was such a fan of a Bulgakov's stage adaptation that he intervened to protect his job at a Moscow theater, allowing Bulgakov to live and work untouched by the purges that claimed so many other Russian writers of the period.
