DESCRIPTION:closing of the Russian consulate and Saudi Prince Mohammed Bin Salman's visit aren't the only international stories coming out of Seattle. The Emerald City is a world-class hub for the global health & development sector, but those beats are woefully undercovered by local and national media outlets. Wind down your work week with the Solutions Journalism Network, Global Washington, and Hive Media Lab and come away with a notebook full of story ideas and sources for untold stories onrefugees, water, human rights, conservation and climate change.   


Experts from Global Washington's members will offer details on stories that are changing the world – and having an impact right here in the Northwest – and journalists will have the opportunity to ask pointed questions and come away with the sketch of future solutions-oriented pieces with a global view.

Journalists will also learn about the Solutions Journalism Network's funding opportunities for media outlets and individual reporters. Linda Shaw (ex-Seattle Times) is now running SJN's West Coast newsroom partnerships and will be on hand to answer questions. Gregory Scruggs and Alison Krupnick from SJN's Puget Sound Chapter will have more info about individual reporter grants, as well as the upcoming West Coast Solutions Journalism Summit in Portland (save the date: July 14).

Katie Hultquist, West Coast Director for OutRight Action International, will discuss how activists are working together here in the U.S and around the world to advance human rights for all LGBTIQ people, and to create an intersectional movement for justice and equality for all people. Also worth noting: the theme of Seattle’s 2018 Pride Parade (June 24) is “Pride Beyond Borders.”


Sebastian Mathews, Senior Director at World Vision U.S., will discuss a recent partnership with Seattle-based Global Good to help rapidly scale a traditional land management practice called Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration. It's already proven successful in Niger, one of the poorest countries in the world, transforming seven million hectares of degraded land into productive farmland, with more than 200 million new trees. 


Kara Uhl, Senior Manager of Program Quality at Splash, will talk about how her organization ensures kids in some of the fastest growing cities in the world have sustainable access to clean water. Last year, Splash reached every orphanage in China (1,100 orphanages/86,000 kids). The five-year goal is to reach one million children in Ethiopia, India, and Nepal. Find out how this unconventional Seattle-based organization plans to reach its most audacious goals, and then put itself out of business by 2030.
