      Lecture: "Harbin, Machuria (Heilangjiang): The Russian City in China 1900-1950," Dr. Liliane Willens
Liliane Willens was born of Russian Jewish parents in the former French Concession of Shanghai, China. Her parents, she and her siblings – all stateless – experienced World War II under the Japanese military occupation, the bombing by American planes and the return of the Chiang Kai-shek government and subsequent Chinese civil war. Because of difficulties to obtain a US immigration visa, Liliane lived two years under the newly established People’s Republic of China.
After Liliane immigrated to the United States, she studied at Boston University where she received her undergraduate degree, a M.A. and Ph.D. on French Language and Literature. She taught these subjects at Boston College and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Later moving to Washington, DC, she worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Peace Corps. A signing of her book Stateless in Shanghai will follow her talk.

    Lecture: "Family Images, Global Visions: China-US Encounters in Private Photographs and Film," Dr. Joseph Ho
Joseph W. Ho is Assistant Professor of History at Albion College and Center Associate at the University of Michigan’s Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. His research focuses on the vernacular photography and filmmaking of American Protestant and Catholic missionaries in modern China. He examines how missionaries visualized their experiences in Republican China and the early People’s Republic while developing a “missionary modernity” in parallel with modern Chinese visual representation.
In 2017, Prof. Ho was a Luce Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of San Francisco's Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History. He is also co-editor, with Prof. Charles Bright (History Emeritus, University of Michigan), of the new book War and Occupation in China: The Letters of an American Missionary from Hangzhou, 1937-1938 (Rowman & Littlefield; Lehigh University Press, 2017), as well as the author of several journal articles and a book chapter on missionary visual practices in 20th century China.
