SUMMARY:A New Era of Failed US-Russia Relations
DESCRIPTION:presidential elections, tensions between the two countries are high. In addition, Russian military activity in Syria as well as other countries in the near abroad, have raised the stakes internationally. This new era of confrontation, according to Former Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, may not mark a return to the Cold War, exactly, but most certainly it could be described as a hot peace.
These troubled times follow what seemed like a period of rapport between the two countries. During Obama’s tenure, Ambassador McFaul helped to usher in a reset of the relationship, including a renegotiated New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). However, Putin soon grew cold to the United States. Trump has proclaimed the need for warmer relations, but this has not yet come to fruition.
What are the major issues that have contributed to the "hot peace" between the US and Russia? How would better relations benefit both countries, and in what ways can Putin and Trump work to repair them?
Michael McFaul, former Ambassador to Russia and author of the new book, "From Cold War to Hot Peace: An American Ambassador in Putin's Russia," will join us to discuss his tenure in Moscow, the current issues concerning US-Russia relations and possible strategies to improve them.
