SUMMARY:American Premiere of Ulrike Ottinger’s Chamisso’s Shadow : A Journey to the Bering Sea,
DESCRIPTION:Aldebart von Chamisso took between 1815 and 1818 through the Bering Sea where he documented the peoples, the flora and fauna of both Arctic Coasts (Siberia and Alaska) of the then Russian Empire. Ottinger, who has been a major figure in avant-garde, feminist and gay cinema since the early 1970’s, will introduce Part One of Chamissos Shadow on October 12 and Chapter 2 on the afternoon of the 13th. See full schedule below.
Chamisso's Shadow is one woman’s heroic retracing of the epic voyage through the Aleutian Islands that Chamisso took armed with the notebooks of his 18 th Century predecessors - Captain Cook, and Vitus Bering with his botanist, Georg Steller.  Like Chamisso, Ottinger begins her journey from Alaska to Kamchatka via Chukotka, with the earlier explorers’ log books as a guide along the way. While Ottinger quotes extensively from Chamisso's lively and sympathetic diaries, she also creates a stunning cinematic log book of her own featured in extraordinary images of water, fish, sea otters, stones, volcanoes, tundra, homes, villages, maps and objects. Ottinger meets the peoples of Siberia and Alaska talking with them about their lives past and present. She records them working, singing and fishing, again and again. Ottinger reveals time is not linear but rather simultaneous, centuries existing alongside one another, brought to life through her precise lens and her ongoing references to original texts.
