DESCRIPTION:de l’Académie Française depuis 2016, Andreï Makine est l’auteur de deux œuvres. Celle qu’il signe sous le nom d’Andrei Makine lui a valu une renommée internationale et de multiples prix. Celle qu’il signe sous le pseudonyme de Gabriel Osmonde est moins connue : plus philosophique, en quête de l’éternité, au-delà des bruits et de la futilité du monde.
L’Alliance Française de Washington est honorée de recevoir Andréï Makine pour la deuxième fois (la première eut lieu en 1998), le vendredi 9 novembre 2018. Il sera en conversation avec le Directeur Exécutif et discutera d’un livre qui lui est particulièrement cher, Le pays du lieutenant Schreiber, paru en 2014 et dont la traduction en anglais est sortie en mai 2018 chez Arcade Publishing, sous le titre : Lieutenant Schreiber’s Country : The Story of a Forgotten Hero. Ce livre a reçu le Prix Littéraire de l’Armée de Terre – Erwan Bergot, à sa parution en 2014. Cet événement sera l’occasion de rendre hommage au lieutenant Jean-Claude Servan-Schreiber, mort le jour de ses 100 ans, le 11 avril dernier.
Andréï Makine parlera aussi de son autre œuvre, les romans à dimension philosophique pour lesquels il a utilisé un pseudonyme : Gabriel Osmonde.
Le livre, Le pays du lieutenant Schreiber, sera en vente en français et en anglais lors de l’événement, pour signature par l’auteur.
L’événement sera exclusivement en français, sans traduction et suivi d’une petite réception.

Born in Russia, Andreï Makine chose France and French language to write. In 1995, he was awarded three French literary prizes for his fourth novel, Dreams of My Russian Summers; never had one novel been acknowledged with so many literary honors before. In 2016, he became the youngest member of the acclaimed Académie française, created by Cardinal de Richelieu (1635). Andreï Makine is the internationally well-known authors of two literary oeuvres: one that he signs under the name Andrei Makine; for the other, a body of work consisting of four philosophical novels, he has used another nom-de-plume, Gabriel Osmonde.
The Alliance française of Washington DC is honored to welcome Andrei Makine for the second time under its roof (the first time was in 1998), on Friday, November 9, 2018. He will be in conversation with the Executive Director. He will specifically discuss Le pays du lieutenant Schreiber, published in France in 2014 and whose English translation was released in May 2018 in the US. This book was awarded with the Prix Littéraire de l’Armée de terre – Erwan Bergot (French Army Literary Prize – Erwan Bergot) at the time of its publication. The event at the AFDC will honor the memory of the real Lieutenant Schreiber who passed away at the age of 100 on the day of his birthday, on April 11, 2018.
Andreï Makine will also discuss his other body or work, published under the name Gabriel Osmonde.
The book, Le pays du lieutenant Schreiber, will be available for sale in both French and in English. The author will sign the books.
The event is exclusively in French. There will be no translation.
A small reception will follow the event.
