One of the best ways to spot a celebrity during the Hamptons high season is to attend an opening night. It doesn't matter whether it's a play, a concert, an art exhibition or a party kicking off a horse show. Why opening night? Because indoors, especially in the evening, you're more apt to catch celebrities without their incognito shades. Here's a round-up of some top Hamptons summer attractions.
AUGUST
The granddaddy (or grandma) of Hamptons summer staples is Guild Hall's 61st annual Clothesline Art Sale. Arrive early (9 a.m.) Aug. 4 for this oh-so arty yard sale (631-324-0806, guildhall.org).
Just down the street, in East Hampton's Herrick Park, first pitch of the annual Artists & Writers Softball Game is at 1 p.m. Aug. 18. Last summer's lineups included Alec Baldwin, Mercedes Ruehl, Roy Scheider, Bob Balaban, Mike Lupica and Ken Auletta, with Rudy Giuliani umpiring. We suspect the former mayor's too busy running for prez to call balls and strikes this year (631-288-7080).
Guild Hall's summer theater season has been displaced due to renovations at the John Drew Theatre. "Heart to Hart," a salute to Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, starring KT Sullivan, plays Aug. 5 at East Hampton Studios at the town airport. Other shows include Steve Martin's witty "Picasso at the Lapin Agile," Aug. 14- Sept. 1, and "Berlin in Hollywood," starring Melissa Errico, Aug. 26 (631-324-0806, guildhall.org).
It's back to the equines for the Hampton Classic Horse Show, Aug. 26-Sept. 2, an exhibition/competition that draws 1,400 horses and riders and 40,000 spectators to the 70-acre farm on Snake Hollow Road (follow the signs from Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton, 631-537-3177, hamptonclassic.com). |
