One of the best ways to spot a celebrity during the Hamptons high season is to attend an opening night. It doesn't matter whether it's a play, a concert, an art exhibition or a party kicking off a horse show. Why opening night? Because indoors, especially in the evening, you're more apt to catch celebrities without their incognito shades. Here's a round-up of some top Hamptons summer attractions.
JULY
Fireworks light up the South Fork around the Fourth of July, starting 9 p.m. on Independence Day itself with a Grucci show, "Stars Over Montauk" at Umbrella Beach (631-668-2428).
Fireworks in East Hampton, Main Beach (631-324-0124), and in Sag Harbor at the yacht club (631-725-0567), are on July 7.
The Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, a favorite of classical aficionados since 1984, opens July 25 with a free outdoor concert at the Bridgehampton Historical Society. Most other concerts are at the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church, where highlights include Bartok's Sonato for Two Pianos and Percussion, Aug. 5, and a week later, Beethoven and Dvorak updated by Pulitzer-winning composer and Adelphi prof Paul Moravec. The festival runs through Aug. 19 (212-741-9073, bcmf.org).
The Hamptons horse season opens July 21 with the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge at the Bridgehampton Polo Club. The Hampton Cup follows on Aug. 11. Together the two series bring matches to the polo grounds, Two Trees Farm on Hayground Road, Water Mill, six straight Saturdays at 4 p.m. (212-420-9420, ext. 29).
