If you like unusual storylines, political satire and graphical imagery of overweight people having sex - this a great read! Written by our very own (born and raised in Leningrad, now a New Yorker) Gary Shteyngart, the book takes us into a life of Misha Vainberg,"a sophisticate and a melancholic" a son of 1232 wealthiest oligarch in Russia. Through Misha's eyes, we are brought into imaginary Absurdistan, a small country on the Caspian sea in a middle of a civil war.
But what got me, were not the obvious references to the FSU's "oil wars" or corruption or prostitution or whatever else comes to your mind when you think of modernity in our big former country; but the beautiful imagery of New York and its people - train rides, the Bronx, Zagat reviews, or descriptions of college-life in "Accidental College" where Misha was among others thinking they can change the world.
Overall, a high five for the book - I recommend. |
