Odyssey Concert Season: Escape

concept of national identity. Chopin explores his Polish roots as a political exile living in France; Prokofiev describes the horrors of World War II as a Russian expatriate having just returned to his homeland; the Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti explores a Portuguese and Spanish style while living abroad; the Bohemian-born Benda assimilates German and Italian influences in his keyboard works; Béla Bartók seeks to create an authentically Hungarian musical idiom, while simultaneously drawing influences from African and Southern-European countries; and Niloufar Nourbakhsh, a New York-based Iranian composer, explores the existential dichotomy of the human existence - the constant striving for action even within the direst circumstances such as the humanitarian crises in the Middle East. 
Immediately preceding this program, our patrons will have the opportunity to attend the first Prelude Concert of our 2018-19 season, offered 30 minutes before the main program. The Prelude Concerts build off of our Young Talents Showcase, seeking to discover and promote local pianists under the age of 18. The performers, selected through recorded auditions paneled by professional pianists and pedagogues, will perform for the patrons of KMA’s Piano Concert Series on some of Steinway Piano Gallery Miami’s finest instruments.
