Animal Farm: A Fairy Story is a political satire written by George Orwell and first published in 1945. A strong supporter of democratic socialism throughout his life, Orwell was dismayed by what he saw as the Soviet Union’s corruption of socialist ideas. The novel is a complex and detailed allegory for Russian revolution, and a cautionary tale of how ignorance and totalitarianism go hand in hand. According to Orwell himself, “revolutions only affect a radical improvement when the masses are alert."
