Global Shabbat: With Love from Ukraine

Join us THIS FRIDAY EVENING at 7 PM in the UES for a delicious Shabbat meal, fine wine (and even some vodka - for the real Ukrainians), and inspiring discussions about Jews in Ukraine and around the globe, and how you can get involved. You may even learn how to milk a goat, and might even forget about the election (especially if you are enjoying the vodka).

Meet Ezra Moses, a Montreal native and former JDC Entwine Jewish Service Corps Fellow, who spent a year and a half in eastern Ukraine and then a few months in Georgia (homeland of Joseph Stalin, not of Jimmy Carter). Ezra developed the Active Jewish Teens (AJT) program, now a leading Jewish youth movement in the FSU. For fans of 1990s rock, it doesn't get Better Than Ezra.

Meet Hannah Miller, a Seattle native and former JDC Entwine Jewish Service Corps Fellow in Odessa, Ukraine. Brighton Beach may be known as "Little Odessa," but Hannah will tell you all about Big Odessa, it's urban Black Sea beaches and its legendary Jewish gangsters. Hannah's wonderful work included creating an innovative travelling library for elderly Jewish Odessites. If you're lucky, Hannah will give you a Pumpkin Pie recipe that will make you wish every day was Halloween.

Meet Lena Kushnir (not to be confused with Jared Kushner). Lena grew up in Bila Tserkva, Ukraine, once a Jewish mecca that ironically is named after an old "White Church." As a JDC Entwine Jewish Service Corps Fellow, Lena spent a year working within Centers for Young Adults in Israel, leading hikes and scavenger hunts with young Russian-speaking Israelis, and sparring with her chutzpanit roommate over who would have the last piece of shakshuka. Lena relocated to Williamsburg, Brooklyn a few years ago, and will tell you the secret of distinguishing a hipster from a hasid.
