Creative Arts Collective and Palmer Woods Association invite students, teachers and adult chaperones (priority seating will be given to students, with limited number of seats allocated for parents and chaperones) to a classical concert at a ­private home in the Palmer Woods neighborhood of Detroit (just north of Seven Mile Rd. and just west of Woodward Ave). The address will be provided the week of the concert for all who have reservations. These educational concerts are geared for a young audience (there is a concert for adults at 8 pm, tickets can be purchased at palmerwoods.org )

MICHE BRADEN Quintet

An extraordinary Diva who’s well known for her portrayals of Billie Holiday, Ma Rainey, Valaida Snow and other legends, Miche Braden is famous for her role as blues giant Bessie Smith in the award-winning sensation “The Devil’s Music, The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith.” The musical, which premiered off-Broadway at St. Luke's Theatre in 2011, has won high praises from the New York Post to The New York Times for Braden's portrayal of the "Empress of the Blues." 
The musical continues to thrill audiences across the country. In a recent performance, The LA Times raves, "Bessie Smith's outsized talents — and personality — are vividly channeled through a powerhouse performance by Miche Braden."
The New York Times describes Miche as "A big voice full of blues, bawdy and unapologetic… she knows when to let it soar and when to keep it at an insinuatingly low simmer.” Detroit-raised Braden returns home for the Palmer Woods Music in Homes grand finale concert to share her bold and brilliant talents, from devilish to angelic.
A versatile artist, actress, singer, poet and songwriter, Braden was mentored by Motown’s Thomas “Beans” Bowlesand Funk Brother Earl Van Dyke, in addition to Jazz Master Harold McKinney. She has sung with Milt Hinton, Lionel Hampton, Regina Carter, and James Carter. She is featured on the James Carter release "Gardenia’s for Lady Day" (Sony/Columbia), and appeared with him at Carnegie Hall. Braden is featured on CDs to be released this year by Regina Carter and Gayelynn McKinney, with whom she shared the stage in the ensemble Straight Ahead. 
This will be an exciting presentation about the music from the great divas of jazz and blues, not to mention Braden’s own fabulous compositions. Braden’s Detroit band includes virtuoso musicians: guitarist A. Spencer Barefield, pianist Buddy Budson, bassist Marion Hayden and drummer Djallo Djakate Keita.  

Creative Arts Collective’s Music for Children series is a free outreach program designed for young audiences to hear and interact with some of Detroit’s most gifted jazz, classical and world music artists, who are part of the Palmer Woods Music in Homes concert series. Concerts are held in the intimate settings of historic homes and gardens and architectural treasures in Detroit’s historic Palmer Woods community. The concerts are most appropriate for children from 4th grade through high school level (college-level students are also welcome). For younger groups, we’ll need adult chaperones to participate and all children must be able to be part of a quiet, attentive audience. Priority seating will be given to students, with limited number of seats allocated for parents and chaperones. Tickets for the evening concerts are available for adults to purchase on palmerwoods.org.
To reserve seats for your group, please respond on this Eventbrite page. Seating is ­limited and is on a first-come basis, so we encourage you to reserve seats as early as possible. Please do honor your reservation and attend the concert so we do not turn away others because we have saved your seats. We do not wish any empty seats! 
Now in its 10th season, Palmer Woods Music in Homes begins in December and concludes in June, in various magnificent and historically significant homes. The program now includes several free afternoon programs for Detroit-area children. Our goal is to share our valuable assets — Detroit’s great music and architectural/artistic residential “concert halls” — with our other valuable assets, our children! We hope these special, intimate concerts will help to inspire our young musicians and children to become lifelong music lovers and future supporters of the arts; and perhaps sitting in our audience will be future Detroit stars, who will also share their talents with the next generation.

Violinist Jannina Barefield &
Pianist Maria Meirelles
 A free concert geared toward a young audience with violinist Jannina Barefield Norpoth, who will return to her hometown to perform with Brazilian-born piano virtuoso Maria Meirelles.
A soloist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra twice while in her teens, Jannina now performs with the New York-based PUBLIQuartet (PQ), the Quartet-in-Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. PQ has performed at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Jazz Festival, Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, Sphinx Connect Artist Showcase, and throughout the US, and debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2015. A versatile musician, she has performed with Jay-Z, Beyonce, Pherell, Regina Carter, Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), Amy Grant, My Brightest Diamond and many others in the pop, jazz and indie rock world. 

Meirelles has appeared in concert under the baton of many notable maestri, including Arthur Fiedler, Sixten Ehrling and Gyora ­Bernstein. Her distinguished career has won her national honors and critical acclaim throughout the U.S. and Latin America, where she often performs. She widely known for her mastery of Beethoven’s 32 Piano Sonatas and the music of Franz Liszt.
