Event Details

NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of St. Petersburg artist Inna Gershov-Slutsky in Figuratively Speaking. The exhibition opened on July 8th, 2016 and runs through July 28th, 2016 with an opening reception on July 14th, from 6 – 8PM. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.

About the Artist

The expressively colored and emotional paintings of Inna Gershov-Slutsky spark feelings of happiness, balanced by the artist’s thoughtfulness and a sense of meditation. A former illustrator, Gershov-Slutsky maintains a strong sense of line in her work while allowing color to be the star. She rarely mixes pigments, instead applying them directly to the canvas with bold, powerful brushstrokes, creating complex compositions filled with texture and light. Gershov-Slutsky prefers not to stick to a single artistic style, however, instead challenging herself to approach each painting differently. They can be figurative or nearly completely abstract, but there is always something distinctive that marks her work as her own. Her preferred subjects are often biblical, but she also paints portraits, slices of daily life, and landscapes. Above all Gershov-Slutsky wants her paintings to be about self-expression. “Art and creative process–for me is my life and passion,” she says.

Gershov-Slutsky was born in the Ukraine, but spent much of her life in St. Petersburg, where she studied art with her uncle, the famous Vitebsk School painter Solomon Gershov. She currently resides in Israel.

About the Exhibition

Figuratively Speaking: Bringing figure and shape into focus

The universal appeal of basic shapes and figures, expressed in images that range from portraits to landscapes to still lifes, is brought into the spotlight in the exhibition Figuratively Speaking. The artists in this show employ a diverse range of approaches and media, using photography and the tools of digital art, as well as oils and acrylics, to illustrate the many forms and meanings that the figure can take. Whether those figures represent people, animals, objects or beings that solely exist in the artist’s imagination, they all bring a strong energy to the paintings or photographs built around them. In abstract and representational settings, they confirm the power that the relationship between figure and background holds. From bright, sharp images in which the subject stands out clearly to moody, densely textured works that put the figure at a tantalizingly remote distance, these artists offer a surprising variety of ways to bring that relationship alive. They all demonstrate how one of art’s basic concepts is always open to new, fresh interpretations.
