Dust and Ashes continues the story, from 1937 to 1943. Sasha had begun a correspondence with Varya Ivanovna, a member of his circle of friends. Varya had been assisting Sasha's mother during his exile, and began to have feelings for Sasha after the end of an early, ill-advised marriage.
