Dissolving Borders: A Photography Project - Russian Mix

Dissolving Borders: A Photography Project

Hello Everyone! My name is Alison Shuman and I'm a documentary photographer based in Brooklyn, NY. I've been working on a project called "Dissolving Borders" that looks at the relationship between the Muslim Tatars and Orthodox Christian Russians in Kazan. It explores religious resurgence in Russia and how the Muslims and Christians in Kazan are finding ways to live peacefully side-by-side and foster a community based in tolerance. Last year I went to Kazan to begin photographing. It was truly an amazing experience. This idea of tolerance is seen and felt at every level in the city from the government, to religious leaders and schools, to the everyday person on the street. Religious tolerance and cultural exchange are topics that have always played a large role in the work that I do. I truly believe that Kazan is a unique place with many important lessons for the world. Last year I self-funded my work in Russia, but now I'm using the platform of Kickstarter to raise money in order to return to Kazan to finish the project. I invite you to have a look at the video I produced to showcase the work I've done thus far in Kazan and to read a little more about me and my project. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1474274760/dissolving-borders If you're not familiar with Kickstarter, the great thing about it is that you receive great rewards in return for the money you donate, such as postcards, prints and books. Support is not just monetary; any help in spreading the word about my project would be greatly appreciated. As an American with full Russian ancestry, I became interested in Russia from a very young age and through backpacking adventures and now professional work, I've been fortunate to have spent a lot of time in country. The Western media gives such a limited view of what life in modern-day Russia is like. This project contributes one story to broadening the world's perspective on Russia.   Thank you so much for your time.  -AlisonAuthor: Vasil H
